Hyalophagia:The Craving For Glass

Hyalophagia, sometimes written hyalophagy, is the name of the eating disorder that implies the consuming of glass. Primarily a pathological disorder, it is a form of pica, a desire for extraordinary articles of food. Hyalophagia is highly dangerous to humans as the process of eating glass has the possibility to cut open the stomach, intestines, and throat as it passes through the digestive system. Hyalophagia is also the name of a performance technique at sideshow performances.

The etimology of the word is explained by splitting it into the Greek "hyalos" (glass) and "phagein" (to eat).
